These are the experiences Mattie Craven Racing is driven to deliver to their owners. It is an infectious journey that Mattie and his team are passionate about taking people on to experience.
After all, Mattie Craven Racing stands by the motto ‘A no-nonsense honest approach by where we only train the horses we know give our owners a real chance to succeed’.
“We want people to experience what they didn’t think was possible,” said Craven.
“We accommodate for all owners and all budgets of horses. “It doesn’t matter what your budget is, we want to make it accessible for everyone.
Having enjoyed success at the highest level with the likes of Group 1 winners Magicool and in more recent times Pink Galahs, Craven and his team have trained more than 480 winners.
Craven has driven more than 890 winners himself. However, it is not all about chasing prestigious races for Mattie Craven Racing.
“The success we’ve had with Pink Galahs is very rewarding,” said Craven. “She is such a special horse and the owners are some mates of mine.
“We’ve won some races of insignificance in terms of status, and they are just as rewarding because our owners are over the moon.
“We love training winners for good people and like our owners coming to the farm and enjoying their horses, that is what is special to us.”
Based on a 40-acre property in Ecklin South, nestled amongst dairy country 15 minutes out of Terang, Victoria, Mattie Craven Racing is a natural setting for horses.
With unique facilities including an 800 metre round track, a 1000 metre straight track and a 1600 metre track through the bush, horses have variety for their specific needs.
There are also facilities to swim horses and also take them to the nearby beach.
“We can cater for up to 40 horses,” said Craven.
“We have both paddocks and boxes, and we treat every horse to their specific needs.
“Some jog days we ride them through the bush or for some of our older horses we’ll take them for a ride down at the beach for something different.
“We can work them conventionally too.”
This variety in training has been a strong part to Craven’s success.
The other is the family-owned operation that keeps the wheels turning at Mattie Craven Racing.
Craven’s partner Amy Day, a talented horse person in her own rite, has been a major part of the success with her care, skill and patience in nurturing and educating the young horses. Amy has had considerable success with training a small team of her own.
Craven’s parents Peter and Helen are also involved as well as Craven’s brothers Glenn, who drives, Simon and Daniel.
